So you’re going to be in Brooklyn for New Year’s Eve? You could totally fly by the seat of your pants and likely end up having a grand time. If you’d prefer to plan out your evening, however, here are a handful of celebrations to consider.
FIREWORKS IN GRAND ARMY PLAZA
Every year, NYC Parks and Recreation showcases an increasingly impressive fireworks display over Prospect Park. Consider this the Brooklyn alternative to watching “the ball” drop in Times Square. It’s free, family-friendly, and has the potential to be fun for all. The fireworks begin precisely at midnight.
NYE AT BARCLAY’S CENTER
The new year always begins with a blowout bash at Barclay’s Center in Downtown Brooklyn, accessible by foot from Nu Hotel Brooklyn. This year’s entertainers include Huey Lewis & The News, and headliner Jimmy Buffett & The Coral Reefer Band. The weather will probably be cold enough outside, but the warmth and energy in Barclay’s Center may just allow you to imagine enjoying a margarita and cheeseburger somewhere in paradise. Tickets for the event start at $65.
ROCKIN’ NYE CONCERT IN WILLIAMSBURG
If you’re willing to travel a couple of miles north to Williamsburg, you can ring in the New Year with critically acclaimed 1980’s alt-rock band They Might be Giants. At $40, this Williamsburg Concert Hall event is one of the more affordable big time shows you’ll be able to find anywhere in the city on NYE.
NYE AT UNION HALL
Park Slope’s venerated hipster pub, Union Hall, has thrown epic and affordable New Year’s Eve celebrations for the last several years. This year’s theme is early 2000’s, and promises a good dose of nostalgia for former and long-time fans of *NSYNC, Britney Spears, Pink, Shaggy, and old-school Jay-Z. Tickets are $5 at the door.
NYE CELEBRATION AT BARGEMUSIC
If you’re a classical music aficionado, there may be not better place for you to ring in the New Year than at BargeMusic in DUMBO, also within walking distance of Nu Hotel. This year, admire violinist Mark Peskanov and pianist Steven Beck as they perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s first six sonatas. All tickets are $100, and include complimentary apple cider and chocolate.
